
Malte Humpert is an investigative journalist for High North News and gCaptain where he researches and writes on developments in the Arctic, especially Western sanctions, shipping, oil and gas, geopolitics, and climate change. His feature stories include Maersk’s groundbreaking container ship voyage across the Arctic in 2018, the impact of the Ukraine War on security in the Arctic, and the transport of Russian crude oil across the Northern Sea Route in tankers without ice-protection. He is also a Senior Fellow with The Arctic Institute, an interdisciplinary non-profit think tank, which he founded in 2011. At the Institute his research focuses on Arctic geopolitics, Arctic shipping and shipping scenarios, and China's political and economic interests in the region. He was also an author on the EU Commission's 2021 report on EU actions in the Arctic and their impact. Malte holds a master’s degree in European Studies from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service with a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, Northridge. He was named a prominent alumni of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, a select list which includes around 100 individuals, in 2013. |
